Innovation and Sustainability for Tomorrow’s Water
The New European Directive on Urban Wastewater Treatment: State of the Art and Future
Perspectives.
A sustainable future starts with water.
Climate change is transforming our planet and makes concrete action to safeguard water
resources urgent. Water is not only a precious resource, but also a driver of growth and
innovation. The Water4Future Symposium represented a unique opportunity to address the
challenges of water management, purification, and reuse from the perspective of circular
economy and environmental sustainability.
The New European Directive and the challenges for the sector
The recent European Directive (3019/2024) introduces stringent requirements for wastewater treatment, creating new challenges and opportunities for the sector:
water reuse and waste reduction;
more restrictive limits for nutrients and pollutants;
mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions to reduce the environmental impact;
removal of emerging contaminants through advanced treatments.
The “polluter pays” principle places cosmetics and pharmaceutical producers at the center of a new economic strategy to finance sustainable solutions.
The meeting point between science, policy and innovation.
The event, promoted by the University of Palermo, brought together four key actors for
sustainable water management:
scientific research and innovation, with new technologies for water treatment and reuse;
policy makers, with regulation and funding strategies;
water resource managers, with the implementation of efficient solutions;
and technology providers, with the development of advanced systems for wastewater treatment.
Two days of discussion and concrete solutions.
During the Symposium, the results of high-impact research projects were presented with the aim of creating a collaboration network among institutions, companies and stakeholders in the water sector. Southern Italy came together to outline a shared pathway towards a sustainable future, laying the foundations for innovative and responsible water management. The five Southern Regions most affected by the water emergency, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria and Sicily, were represented during the two days of Water4Future.
