ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND CLIMATE CHANGE GASES IN SEWAGE PLANTS: A DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR SIZING AND MANAGEMENT

The Project Energy consumption and GreenHouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the wastewater treatment plants: a decision support system for planning and management.
Supported by grant of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) through the Research project of national interest PRIN2012 (D.M. 28 dicembre 2012 n. 957/Ric − Prot. 2012PTZAMC).

Four operational units

The project: The research project focuses on developing an innovative mathematical model platform for designing and managing wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to reduce energy costs and emissions (solid, liquid, and gaseous) associated with WWTP management.
Aims: Both individual and synergistic contributions will characterize the two phases of the project (experimental and modeling) and their combination will allow us to achieve the aim and the final result of the project: development of an innovative mathematical platform for the design and management of WWTPs by reducing the environmental impact in terms of both energy costs and emissions. The quantification of emissions using a standardized measurement protocol and the technologies employed, which will lead to the development of a prototype tool, will also constitute one of the major aims and results of the project.

Dissemination

The project activities led to the publication of 14 scientific papers, 22 conference proceedings, and 1 book, garnering more than 800 citations (reference).
